No talk about Avatar yet?

I'm actually quite surprised that no one around here has mentioned Avatar yet, especially since it comes out tomorrow.  I'm 99% sure I'll be going to see it on IMAX 3D, but I'm waiting to see some more user ratings come out over the weekend.  Even if the story is a little weak (which seems to be the current theme), the effects alone will probably be worth the price of admission.

I did find it quite odd that there are supposedly 497 user reviews on Yahoo! for a movie which isn't out yet AND the reviews for which aren't posted yet.  This is why I go with the mass of reviews at multiple sites, since they're all bound to be padded with lots of fake ratings.  In my mind, if the reviews get into the thousands and the movie still has at least a B rating, it should be at least a decent movie.

Who else is undecided or has already made up their mind?

Undecided. Leaning towards not bothering. I'd rather see Sherlock Holmes next week.

And this is coming from someone who watched (and loved) Cameron's Titanic just for the effects.

It seems to have been talked about a lot for a while.  A lot of people seemed to have been excited over the trailer months ago.  Doesn't this seem to be more like a summer release movie?  Is anyone surprised that this wasn't?  I think I'm just going to wait for it to be released on bluray.  Maybe it will be released in the summer and I'll set the projector and everything up outside and show it.

Seems like it's overhyped, but we'll see...

Plot seems a little lame (or weak) to me. We'll see.

Well the TV previews look interesting hopefully the entire movie can keep us rapt.  To continue a theme I have to say, we'll see.

I'm not sure what I want to see honestly; I know I do want to see Sherlock Holmes though.  There really hasn't been anything in the Theaters Lately that I really really want to see.  This just popped up on Gizmodo...

I saw it last night in 3D.  My brother-in-law won early tickets through a radio station.  Avatar is the best movie I have seen in a lonnnnnnnnnnng time.  The 3D helps of course, but it did have a good plot.  I rarely go to the movies any more because I have a projector at home and can watch up to a 177" screen.  I may go see this one again.  It is a long movie.  The only thing that didn't keep me completely immersed, like say Titanic, was the 3D glasses.  They were a bit uncomfortable.  But the 3D picture itself was awesome.  If you're into sci-fi, I would definitely see this movie.  As a comparison, it was way better than 2012 and tons better than Star Trek.

The little Rascal Christmas story was better than 2012, IMO. I did like Star Trek though. I am hoping an afternoon showing next week will not be to crowded with punk teenagers giggling through the entire movie.

I was on the fence up until I read this article.  Thanks for this!  We're definitely going now.  This is almost exactly what I was expecting of the film, so I don't think I'm going to be disappointed.

Saw this in IMAX 3D yesterday.  I was growing skeptical after reading some of the criticism, and length.  But IMHO, it was great movie making.  The story was 3/5 and visuals 7.5/5(ok 5/5).  A better way to put it though is that I was pleasantly surprised at the actual execution of the movie.  Some reviews have questioned things in the movie and why they didn't take time to explain them......................well many of these WERE actually explained in the movie.  Its like some reviewers weren't really paying attention because they didn't want to like it.  There was plenty of depth to the characters and their motivations.  I think some reviewers want LOST like explanations for every character in a 2 hour movie.  Aint gonna happen.  But back on subject, my sold out viewing definitely had fun.  2 or 3 ovations during the movie.  Lots of wow at some of the 3D(best 3D ever in a movie) and CGI.  I can't believe anyone tried to compare any other movie to this visually.  This isn't high drama and it isn't a mere popcorn flick, but something inbetween.  Great start to a franchise and new world.  Definitely am wondering what will happen next and want to see it in 3D.

So Matt and Trey make fun of something and that's the final word? Love those guys, but they make fun of everything.  So basically you'd be left with South Park.

Great!  I can't wait for the Bluray to be out.....  (yes, I don't watch movies in cinema anymore ever since I've built my HT!)

Sooooo, the picture/image quality in 3D is really good huh??  no weird color tinting like the early 3D movies??  (my last 3D movie experience was Journey to the Center of the Earth in 3D Bluray @ my HT)

This is a must-see movie in my opinion.  I recommend you get a ticket to an IMAX-sized screen and see it in 3D.  Waiting to see it on Blu-ray would be like waiting for the HD version of Star Wars to come out in VHS Wink

I don't go to the theater all that much, but I saw it yesterday & I plan to see it again after Christmas.  I liked it that much.

Went and saw this yesterday and both the wife and I really enjoyed it.  Unfortunately we had to watch the non-3D version due many reasons (motion sickness, 3D glasses never fit over regular glasses, etc.).  Even without 3D I thought the CGI was great.  The storyline wasn't bad (though we still have no idea why that rock is worth so much  :Smile ).  Little details that I either missed or were left out.  I'll have to watch it again when it comes out on disk..

I wondered that too.  It was never mentioned.  It must be for power/solar panels or something like that.

I still haven't seen it yet, but I believe it'll be either this weekend or next that we finally go see it.  It's amazing how it went from "may not make a profit" to "may beat Titanic".  I think that title is a bit premature, though.  Avatar is currently at $1.12B, so it has another $680M to go, which is more than they initially expected it to make over it's entire run!

I think it will beat Titanic as this movie is not as much of a romance film as Titanic was.

I saw it twice, 3D and IMAX 3D.  I enjoyed it both times, as did my wife.

Was it worth the added cost for the IMAX 3D?  Did you see it on one of the huge IMAX screens or at a local theater with just an 'above average' screen?

A huge one, well the largest in Houston AFAIK.  For a first time viewing I think it would have been worth it, for a 2nd time it wasn't but it was only $3 extra per ticket.

Good to know, thanks!  I was planning to go to a huge IMAX theater up in West Nyack, so it's good to get confirmation on my intentions.

Saw it in 3D (regular 3D and not the XD 3D) over the holidays and loved it.  The visuals and colors in this movie are absolutely amazing.  I got the wife pissed at me because I noticed the projector was slightly out of focus during the initial 2D previews so I stopped by the front desk to let them know about it after we left the theater (she hates anything that could possibly embarrass her, but that's the hazard of being married to a Home Theater geek).

I would have loved to check out the Xtreme Digital 3D version that was playing in the same theater but it was a later showing and my son had to go to work that afternoon.  My wife had to get up and walk around a bit because the 3D was giving her vertigo.  The 3D effect can be a bit overwhelming at first but I found that you get accustomed to it in short order.  We've also got an Imax theater in the area but all the showings are at night.  We generally like to take in matinees for the lower prices and smaller crowds.

FYI - the 3D glasses will fit right over regular eyeglasses so don't let that stop you from seeing it in 3D.

Apparently it didn't take all that much longer for Avatar to surpass Titanic:

Quote:
Twentieth Century Fox said that the sci-fi epic had amassed an estimated global total box office take of $1.8437 billion, just ahead of Titanic's worldwide total of $1,843,201,268, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Yeah, yeah, we all know about the inflation thing and actual number of tickets sold, but this is still impressive.  Consider the fact that this happened at a time when the economy was down, too.

Man, I gotta go see this thing!

Yeah me too. Been slacking cuz everyone I know already saw it. At least I don't have to worry about it not playing long, my friend went to a show on Saturday and many show times were still sold out. How often do you have to worry about a show selling out before you can get tickets this far into its release?
