I can confirm that this is not possible on a Tivo either.  You have the same functionality that most other software provides (shows designated as new or repeat, etc).  I get the feeling that the networks would raise holy hell if this got implemented, due to it "facilitating the piracy of TV shows and stealing millions of dollars of revenue from DVD sales"...  or something to that effect!  ;D
