MCE 2005 Fresh install - Windows Updated now seen as XP Pro??? wtf ???

Hi,

Anyone else run into this. or have any ideas?

I just ran into this problem last week.
I did a fresh install from Legit CD's on my MCE PC.

It needed a fresh install to speed things up.

and now after updates from Windows update
The PC is now reported as XP Pro ..... Sad

Rollup update 2 will not install.
it identifies the install as XP Pro,
MCE shell runs just fine, Live TV etc...
But Windows cant see Vbox tuner in MCE

It was all working before  >:(

I have a legit original Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 set of two disks.

Just a tip, for others
If durring install, installer asks for service pack two CD,
just put in CD 1

No, during the install when it asks for "Service Pack 2" you have to put in the second CD.  Right now you have a broke Windows XP Professional install.  You need to format and reinstall again to fix it.

CD1 --> CD2 --> CD1

Thanks Chris

I'm sorry, yes this is how I did my install  CD1 --> CD2 --> CD1

After install from Cd's, XP MCE boot screen loads,
but after windows updates, XP Pro boot screen loads.

System properties show...

Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Media Center works fine, however no digital tuners without update rollup 2.
MCE updates refuse to install.
claims I'm not running MCE Tongue

I will have to wait for a while to reinstall from scratch onto the Machine,
as my wife and kids will freak out if the Media Center is down again.

I have been running a HTPC with MCE for the last 5 years
and until last week MCE 2005
They really have got used to having it running.

plenty of shows to watch with two 300 Gig drives as RAID0

Also remember Rollup 2 requires .NET 1.1 SP1 to be installed before it.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=a8f5654f-088e-4...

Also note that having .NET 2.0 installed doesn't mean you can skip installing .NET 1.1 they are seperate frameworks.

Sounds like a wrong registry Indent value

What does HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Indent have a value of?

Bingo.

MCE 2005 RTM (without any Update Rollups) that should be set at 3.0.  If you have Update Rollup 1 installed, it should be 3.1.  And after Update Rollup 2 it should be 4.0.

Make the change and it should work.

That's ok, it often gets screwed up.  When stuff sometimes gets installed in the wrong order it makes the wrong changes.

Edit it to a value of 3.0 if there are no Update Rollups installed.  Then, try to install Update Rollup 2.

ok...
I will edit the value to 3.0 and try to install Update Rollup 2
and report back the results.

Thanks again ChrisL01  Smile
