LG Blu-Ray Drive Trouble

So, for Christmas last year my wife bought me a LG Blu-Ray drive for my media PC. Up until mid December of this year the drive has performed admirably.

Recently though the drive is very selective about playing Blu-Ray movies. When a BR disc is inserted if it deems unacceptable it honks after very lightly spinning up the disc.

If I place the disc in upside down and try it does the same thing. Replacing the disc right side up after the incorrect insertion usually fixes the problem. Unfortunately it has began getting worse, requiring additional insertions to finally get the drive to read the disc correctly.

DVD's and HD-DVD's have no problems at all. They work any time and every time.
I mean really why does this happen to me...

Any ideas as to what could be the problem.

- I had the problem with Vista x32. I upgraded to Win 7HP x64 and the problem continued.
- The BR movie used in the problem has been with every movie and no particular one.
- All the latest firmware updates have been applied.
- BR software is TMT 2.xxx

Sounds like the drive itself is failing. I'd try for RMA.

Have you tried cleaning the censor?

How would one go about doing "Cleaning the sensor"? And is it safe for the drive?

I mean when it finally recognizes the BR disc it works perfectly, and like I said with HD-DVD's and regular DVD's it works flawlessly all the time. So I dont want to damage it further. If it were damaged at all.

I'd start with some compressed air to see if maybe there's a speck of dirt on the lens.  If that doesn't work, you'd probably need to take the drive apart in order to access the lens, which is why they sell lens cleaning kits.  They're usually under $10.  Basically, it's a disc with a few brushes attached to the disc itself, which run over the lens to try and remove debris from it.  Unless the lens is already somehow loose and that's the cause of your issue, the cleaning should not hurt anything.  Most people are familiar with these from the CD player days.  Some kits come with cleaning solutions, but I've never tried them, so YMMV.

So, after working with Tech support and trying everything under the sun, I declared the Blu-Ray portion of the drive dead (Although technically still working every 25-50 tries).

I ordered a new Blu-Ray drive and things are much much better now, although I don't believe that the new drive plays HD-DVD's. /sigh.

Thanks for the suggestions guys and gals. Hope this helps anyone else who may have this problem.

Sorry you couldn't salvage the drive, but glad you have one up and running again.

If you have an investment in HD-DVDs now may be a good time to secure one of these Toshiba HD-DVD drives (linked below) for backup purposes.  I bought one a while back just in case my LG multi drive goes kaput.

I really just need to find the time to rip all of my HD-DVDs so that I won't have to worry about the durability of my optical drives.

I have an Xbox360 HD DVD drive (which also works just fine on a PC) which you could have for like $20. It's basically a custom external version of the Toshiba drive LowTech linked to.

Thanks Matt. But I think I will just replace the HD-DVD's I have. I just sold most of them to a friend of mine and only have Batman Begins left. So all is not lost.

Cheers!

Yep I ditched all my HD DVDs mid-2009 and started to slowly phase in the Blu-ray versions.
