Inexpensive External Storage Connection Options

Ok so the question is with all the very large inexpensive external storage options becoming available which types suit themselves better to what we want to do? 3TB Network $159.00 with code, 3TB USB3 $169.00. USB3, Network, eSATA, if you are lucky enough Thunderbolt?

If this is going to store music, pictures, RecordedTV, vidoes, being accessed by multiple clients I say the heck with theory we need to put this to the test and see which one works best.  It might be a USB connected to the USB port of a router suprisingly enough, but do we know.  Has anyone tried this and come to a conclusion?
