The main issue for me is the cost and the fact you cannot build a cablecard HTPC. $3000 is a bit much for a DVR. In 3 years, think about how cheap a good HTPC will be.
Vista is a good step in the right direction.

At Velocity Micro, expect to pay $2,000 for a CableCard system. And $3,000 for a CC + Blu-ray system.

i would move most of the storage from the htpc to a central server
gigabit lan is more than enough for recording/playing
maybe mce 2005 on a flash card,

Who is spending $3000 on an HTPC? You can build a pretty damn good one for about $700-$800 these days...
