I've been reading lots of things, but still can't figure out the best way to get my videos/music etc up to my bedroom TV.
I currently have an htpc in the basement. I am planning to very soon turn my other computer into a server.
We usually only watch one TV at a time if that helps.
Any ideas?
Some background info might help us help you...
1. Can you hardwire in a network? or is it wireless only?
2. What is your program of choice? Vista MCE, SageTV BTV etc?
3. What are your specs of your HTPC and server?
4. What is your budget?
5. Is your bedroom TV an HDTV?
6. Cable or sat or OTA?
7. Linux or windows?
8. Interested in anything besides PVR duties? Home Automation? Distribution to other rooms? Multi-zone audio? etc etc Gaming? ROMS?
1. I can do both, so either is an option.
2. I currently use Windows XP and Meedio.
3. My HTPC is an Athlon64 2800 with 1 TB of storage and 1Gig Ram. 2 Hauppauge PVR 250's and a 6600GT video card. Currently hooked up to my 42" DLP via DVI and digital audio to my Receiver. Eventually I want to use an Athlon XP 2200 for my server and put the storage in there. Everything is inside a closet (with nice ventilation) and my RF remote controls everything.
4. I've got a new baby on the way, so my budget is <500 Cdn.
5. Bedroom TV is not an HDTV. just a simple 21" Flat Screen CRT.
6. Rogers Cable
7. Windows XP, but I am interested in Linux and may make my server a linux box.
8. Basically I want to be able to watch TV and have access to my Meedio (to watch movies, music etc) from the bedroom. In the future I want to hook up a touch screen to the main floor for audio only.
Hopefully this helps. I was thinking originally of just somehow getting video from my htpc to the second TV in the bedroom and bringing my RF remote with me, but I'm not sure I want to do that.
Easiest way to do what you want is to switch to SAGETV, and buy a SageTV Media Extender. Since your TV isn't HDTV in the bedroom it is a good option for you. SageTV is suppose to be coming out with an HDTV Media Extender, but there is no word on when that is coming out.

That should cover most of the questions you might want to ask yourself and others will ask you when you are planning your network.
I typically start off by asking myself.. What media do I need in each room and then sort of back into what I need for each room and then server needs. One room may only require something liek a Media MVP media extender from Hauppauge (Sagetv/BTV extender solution) or an Xbox 360 (Vista extender solution). Or you may want a full on HTPC in another.. or simply a touchscreen with a small stereo for audio in another..
