HD-DVD/BlueRay in Linux

Well I finally got Ubuntu Ultimate Edition up and running on a new machine to the point where I feel I can use it as a production machine (YEAH!!) ;D
The MB is using an ATI 3300HD IGP and the drivers are installed, running and the display looks great.  Due to a conflict between the IGP drivers and the desktop effects I have to disable the effects if I want to watch a DVD or video from the net but I found a small app that turns them on & off w/ a click.
My question for the Linux guru's (as I'm still a noob  :Smile) is there a way to playback HD-DVD's/BlueRays on Linux yet?(I have 2 LG HD-DVD/BlueRay combo drives installed in this machine)  And what is the preferred video player for Linux and is there a good noob setup guide for that player around. (even tho DVDs can play there are still some issues with having them play with their menus so it's simply clicking on the menu items.)

Many thanks (help a noob escape M$)

The 2 standard media players for the Linux environment are Xine and MPlayer.  The Xine interface is a bit more polished, but MPlayer seems to support more media formats.

At this point, DVD playback is still a little hazy on its legal status within Linux, so I wouldn't expect HD-DVD or BlueRay support any time soon.  You can, however, play content that has already been ripped from either media.

I am not sure of a way to rip discs in Linux. Here is a way in Windows.

dvd::rip is one way to rip DVDs in Linux.  I'm not familiar with any method to rip HD-DVDs or BRs within the Linux environment.

Blu-ray is not really anywhere near being available in linux yet, unfortunately. Is there is a bit of hacked workaround to do it, but it is very time consuming (done each time to watch) and not the most user friendly. It basically involves dumping the entire disc to HDD first and then playing, but you have to dump the unprotected stream, etc.  You can read up more about it over at the Doom9 forums if you are interested.

For now, the best bet is to either watch them in a virtual machine (virtualbox or vmware) running windows or to rip them with anydvd hd (and usually re-encode them with something like ripbot264) and then watch them in linux.

As for movie players, I like VLC. It is available for every platform and will play just about anything you throw at it.

Welcome to Linux!

UPDATE: Actually, Blu-ray is now capable of being played back in Linux. It is not native playback and only a simple workaround, but much easier and nicer than the previous process! You can find a how to guide for it over at The Media Viking here: http://bit.ly/8Bq7f7
