DVD Playback Skipping

I tried to watch a DVD last night and for some reason, it is skipping slightly every 30-60 seconds.  Its not the really-bad-everything-shuts-down-scratch-on-the-disk type skipping, it is just a little hiccup every now and then.  Still its annoying, and I didn't watch the show.

I tried the following, all failed to fix the problem:

  • turned the fans up to high even though my temps looked normal
  • I reinstalled PureVideo, which I knew would not help because live TV played fine.
  • I reinstalled my audio driver because the skipping is more noticeable via audio than video.
  • I went into IDE properties and deselected PIO only, selected DMA if possible.

The only thing that I have done lately was to take everything apart and do some dusting and general housekeeping inside the case.  Oh, and I also took out my DTA-150 HD tuner and put in a linksys 100mb NIC to attach my HDHR to directly, which I have not yet done.  The HDHR is still going through my router.

Please help, I've been watching a lot of TV on DVD lately and cannot afford to loose DVD functionality for long.

  • AMD X2 4200 EE

I recently had a similar problem with DVDs on my MCE2 machine (nearly identical to your system). However, my problem had to do with a slight lag when streaming ripped VOBs over the network. Streaming SD recorded TV material was fine.

It noticed it after installing the nVidia 162.18 video drivers (which were bad all around). I uninstalled those, installed the 94.24 drivers and it was still there. I shut everything down, waited a couple of minutes, and did a cold boot. Now it's working fine.

I didn't test an actual DVD in the drive to see if the results were the same. Incidentally, I used to have a little lag when streaming TV over the network using the 93.31 drivers. Streaming VOBs was fine. (I always thought it was a networking issue.) But it appears (at least in my case) to be an issue with the ForceWare drivers for the 6150 chipset.

Wow, that is a nearly identical system.  I have not messed around with video drivers for a while so that should not be the problem, I think they are Forceware 94.xx.  Also, I have streamed VOBs over my 100mb network without problem in the past, but have not recently.  I have restarted the machine several times and been in standby for long periods. Last cold reboot was after I had the machine apart on Saturday, possibly when all the problems started.

Separate question, are you able to control fan speeds on the Yate Loons (same as I have) with the NF-M2 board?  SpeedFan does nothing for me and the bundled software only controls one fan (Sys) and doesn't even seem to do that well.  CPU, Aux1, and Aux2 are all 100% all the time.

I am using the Abit Guru software to control one of the Yate Loons (Sys) and the Nexus fan (CPU) on the Thermalright for CPU cooling. I wired a Zalman 7v undervolt capacitor in line with the other Yate Loon to reduce it down. With the Abit software I can monitor it, but can't control it. However, running at 7v seems to make it the same speed as the board-controlled one with the Abit Guru settings for "Quiet" enabled. IIRC the Loons turn around 1080RPM and the Nexus 1140RPM. It's really quiet.

I don't know about you, but I really like the Abit board. My only disappointment is with the 6150 chipset. I think that's where I'm seeing my lag problem. It's constant on 1080i material, but it crops up once and again with other things depending on background applications, video drivers, audio drivers, and Windows Update changes.

Changing out the 6600GT in my MCE1 machine to an 8600GT has made an enormous difference. I'm about ready to disable the 6150 and put in an 8-series card instead. I just haven't decided on a passive card that will fit in the NSK2400 case (I don't think there's enough height clearance to use the same SilentPipeII 8600GT card as my other machine).
