Disclaimer Question with Windows XP

I wanted to buy Windows XP Home or Pro for use with SageTV and a personal PVR.  Newegg has both for sale.

I'm want to finish building my computer, but I'm not sure what the disclaimer means for me.  Maybe it's means nothing.  Can I still buy and use either version for my personal use?  I don't want Vista.

"Disclaimer: Use of this OEM System Builder Channel software is subject to the terms of the Microsoft OEM System Builder License. This software is intended for pre-installation on a new personal computer for resale. This OEM System Builder Channel software requires the assembler to provide end user support for the Windows."

I have bought many times with no issue. I think the intent is to force people support the software instead of micorsoft.

That disclaimer has been there for years on OEM versions of Windows.

Since your building the PC yourself, you're the "OEM" and you provide your own support for the PC/Windows. Is basically what it's saying.

I got into a big debate over at [H]ardforum about OEM software.  I did not know that, supposedly, OEM software is intended only for one install.  So if anyone had to reinstall for any reason supposedly you're supposed to go out and buy a new copy??  That's the way it was explained to me.  Of course, you can actually reinstall it many times; there's nothing that's going to stop you (except for the number of activations you're allowed)...whether it violates the agreement...I've never read it word-for-word.

It's not one install (that'd be insaine). It's per one physical PC. Technically the OEM versions are supposed to be bound to one pre-made PC, ala what the big box makers do.

Of course for us tech savvy consumers things aren't quite so straightforward. If something that is considered core to the system changes then it technically isn't the same PC anymore and in theory the licence is supposed to be retired.

The reality is that
a.) MS's reps on the activation hotline know that people build their own systems and shit happens and you have replace a mobo, etc. and you can explain this to them and they'll generally let it go.

b.) People have found that after 120 days of no changes since the last on-line activation (one that didn't require calling in), they basically "forget" what the system was and you could install it on a brand new system (i.e. your rebuilt PC) without issue.
