Central HTPC download site

Hey guys,

I've just released an HTPC site that is intended to be a community managed site. Users can share their HTPC software, rate and review it; post guides for help the public; communicate on the forums and stay up to date with the latest in HTPC news.

Please check it out, sign up and help create a community.
You can find the site at: http://www.htpcresource.com/

Looking forward to meeting you all.

Sounds good to me. I'd love a place to find all the plug ins for VISTA MCE and walk thrus. I can never find good walk thrus for any of the other PVR software solutions that also tell you why it is better than the Vista implementation

This was something we talked about doing at HTPCnews.com, but it never really came to fruition.  Of course there were the guides and so forth, however it would have been an administrative nightmare to keep up with all of the new software, plugin, and codec releases.  If you have the time and resources, I think it definitely would be worthwhile.

I think this is a great idea.  It seems that plugins for MCE have gone no where since Vista was released.  I keep looking for new sites in the hope that new stuff is coming out only to find the same ol stuff.

The concept is great, but I agree with Blue:  an administrative nightmare.  I don't think we actually need a place that has everything.  Doom9 and Free-codecs both do great jobs for codec packs and media players, so I don't see a need to reinvent the wheel there.  I think the Sage and Beyond do an okay job of storing plug-ins and such, but it would be nice to have a single site that stored plug-ins for all the programs out there.

Server: WHS, SuperMicro dual Xeon X7DWE, 1 x Xeon L5410, Thermalright HR-01, 4GB Crucial ECC, 8 port PCI-X SATA, 4 port RocketRAID 2300, 5x1 PortMultiplier, Corsair HX1000W PSU, Lian-Li PC343B case [blog]
Storage:
2 x Addonics 5-in-3 bays, 13TB
Client:
SageTV 7, Windows 7 64-bit, Foxconn G9657MA-8EKRS2H, Core2Duo E6600, Zalman CNPS7500, 2GB Corsair, 320GB, HIS ATI 4650, Antec Fusion [blog]

Meedio's MAID was the best plug-in manager ever.  I wonder how good Meedio could have gotten if Yahoo hadn't thrown a pile of money at them Sad

The Meedios site has a version of MAID running.  The person who did that code might be able to provide some help.

I have to agree, without author involvement it would be a night mare.. However, gathering a list of links to all the plugins wouldnt be too too bad.. User reviews of the plugins maybe..

If I went through with it, the users would be the ones uploading the files and I would just be authorizing them. Thats the final goal at least. At first I would have to get some files up myself to get the site rolling.

I've decided to use Joomla! with SMF forums and Mosets Tree to handle the download section. Right now I'm looking for someone to help with the php coding of Mosets Tree to handle a download section which shouldn't be hard at all.
I'm also going to need some help eventually with the management aspect, forums moderators ect.
I have the initial web hosting and domain name covered.

Using Mosets Tree will allow authors to upload their own plugins, users to rate and review it and provide an easy-to-browse structure.

If your willing to help with anything post here or e-mail me at tarrence13 at gmail dot com

Why not use a WIKI format and let contributors manage it themselves?

The system i want to use will make it easier for users that don't know exactly what they want to find what they need. If I make a guide section I will use a Wiki format.

Thanks for the suggestion tho.

C|Net has a Media Center section, but like that and all the other sites that have tried, they've just had trouble pulling it all together. The problem with HTPC stuff, is that there's just soooo much out there, and so much information on each plugin. Just look at that MASSIVE thread at TGB or AVS-Forum. At least the GreenButton download section is just for MCE, the one at AVS for all HTPC Softwares is just beyond obscene.

But I'd definitely bookmark it Smile

ok, so i just took a look, and i hope you can take some constructive criticism. it really seems like the site is going in 50 different ways, news, forums, downloads guides.

i think you should stick to your original goal and really really focus on making it as easy & central a download site as possible. the download section is pretty bleh & well, boring, not to offend, but it seems pretty basic.

i think everyone that read & posted loved your original idea...but i'm not sure implementation has followed the original purpose. Maybe that's just the template that was available, but just a suggestion. if you could think of a creative & easy to use way to see downloads, i think that's where the success will come.

totally just my $0.02, so take it with a grain of salt, just trying to help Smile
