BUY.COM - 1TB Fantom External USB HDD $130.00 after rebate

BUY.COM has a deal on a Fantom external USB 1 TB HDD.  The price is $149.99 and has a $20.00 mail in rebate offer until the end of July 2008.  This is a reconditioned drive.

I will be the first to admit, I have not had good luck with Fantom external drives, they seem to be flaky.  I have after having issues either sent them back to Fantom for repair or I have opened  the enclosure and used the HDD as just another internal HDD.

The price is good even for an external 1 TB drive and/or it still comes with a warranty.

ehhhhhh. i never understood the fascination with these types of devices. For a little more (IF even), you can simply buy a hard drive & an external enclosure, and then have the flexibility to replace it or use multiple drives. Versus $130 on this which if it breaks, you have to send it right in.

As I wrote, I have had problems with Fantom drives before.  The electronics in the enclosure were a bit flaky.  I took the drive out of the enclosure and I currently use it as an internal drive.

And at $130.00 for a 1 TB drive is cheap (yeah, cheap could be the imporant word in that description).  Most of the 1 TB drives I have seen lately are around $190 to $200 range.

I will mention that NewEgg has 2 models of 750 GB HDD (OEM) on sale for $99.  This supposedly a 24 hr sale.

Buying the external drive just to "salvage" the internal drive reminds me of back a couple of years ago when some manufacturer was selling MP3 players with something like 2 or 4GB Micro Drives inside real cheap.

Folks with CF II compatible cameras were buying these so that they could get the Micro Drive at bargain prices for their cameras.  Obviously there are some risks involved with this practice.

Western Digital, SATA - 16MB cache, 7200 RPM - nice drive , if you like Western Digital drives.

Generally, I have not purchased external drives.  I have purchased external enclosures for hard drives I have replaced and don't have room for in the PC case.
