AVerMedia AVerTV HD DVR video capture card - With HDMI

The card's not that interesting because it can only capture non-HDCP HDMI signals and there's no 5.1 audio when recording via component.

I had ordered it a few months ago when it was initially released and returned as it does not work natively from Windows Media Center.  The manual and documentation was vague as it used "Media Center" to refer to its own software and not Windows Media Center.  The price point is great but I didn't have time to tinker with solutions to get it to work.

well, to be fair, isn't that the same issue that was with the HD PVR from hauppauge? That's why you need additional software to get it to work in MCE?

If enough people start buying this, you don't think they could figure that AND the whole HDCP restrictions out? Smile

I think it has potential for sure, especially at that price point.

And if they don't sell enough?

I can't believe this company continues to get away with selling products where characterizing the software it ships with "pre-alpha" is being kind.

If nothing else, it adds competition to the component capture space and hopefully will drive the price of the HDPVR down being that is roughly 1/2 the cost.

Uh, that's only if it worked. As it is, there's no media center support and usage is entirely flacky. Shit, it didn't even work properly half the time. Last time I checked the HDPVR actually worked and even was possible to use in MC and other PVR apps.

it records in mpeg2 for HD sources.  That's not cool

Crim, i don't have one so correct me if i'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the HD-PVR does *NOT* work with MCE natively, and hence requires that 3rd party driver software which is commercial (costs $$)?

is this not accurate?

Does it matter? The fact is is that it will work with MCE. This will not. You'd figure that if Avermedia wanted to really sell this they'd create their own work around for it so that it was more "user friendly" then the HDPVR. That would be one hellova selling point.

You need to use DVBLink SW to expose the HDPVR to MC, I think it's only $20 so not a huge investment all things considered.

The Avermedia card isn't really intended to be a TV capture card, it's marketed to people who want to record themselves playing video games and digitize video tapes.

That's such an odd comment i don't know where to start Smile SO....Hauppauge releases a product, without MCE support (still to this day don't officially support), so 3rd party company comes and fixes THEIR problem...but because Avermedia does basically the same, it's awful?

Don't get me wrong, i'm not defending eitehr company, i think both Hauppauge & Aver need to release fixes for MCE, but the inclusion of HDMI in this unit just gives me some hope versus the Hauppauge which doesn't have it.

IF it can  gain enough popularity, i bet yout he folks at DVBLink could fix this one as well, no?
