News - Bluetooth Keyboard Support Likely Coming to Apple TV

Bluetooth Apple TVA beta software update for the Apple TV has added an intriguing new feature in the form of Bluetooth keyboard support. Reportedly, beta testers are able to pair any Bluetooth keyboard with their Apple TV for text input and menu navigation. While the included remote provides all the control necessary to take advantage of the Apple TV, the addition of keyboard support would certainly be a nice option. Of course, the addition of Bluetooth keyboard support also raises the potential that might be unlocked if Apple takes the next logical step and provides support for other input devices that would allow for voice control and input or, combined with the long desired addition of apps, transform the Apple TV into an entry-level game console. Given the efforts that competitors such as Microsoft are making to add new features and services for their devices, it would make sense that Apple will need to start adding new capabilities if they ever want to take the Apple TV past the hobby phase.

Specifically, the beta for Apple TV being tested by registered developers right now adds Bluetooth support to Apple’s set top streamer, making it possible to pair keyboards to the device for much easier text entry and streamlined navigation. But it could open the doors for much more to follow, and gamers could be a group that especially benefits from the changes.

News - Apple TV Updated to Version 5.1, Adds iTunes Account Switching and Enhanced AirPlay

Gen 2 and gen 3 Apple TV devices have received an update to version 5.1. It marks the first substantial update we have seen to the Apple TV in some time and it brings with it some long-awaited features. For many folks, the most exciting new feature will probably be the iTunes account switching feature that allows the Apple TV to save multiple Apple IDs and makes it easy for users to switch between accounts. There is also support for new screensavers, more advanced networking configurations, and an option for subscribing to shared Photo Streams. There are also a couple of surprising new features, particularly the ability to reorder the app icons on the second screen and the ability to use the Apple TV to send AirPlay content. The inability to customize the apps icons on-screen was a major issue when the new UI launched alongside the gen 3 Apple TVs, so it is nice to see Apple finally respond, but hopefully it is also a sign that Apple might be preparing to offer more Apple TV apps. As for expanding the AirPlay capabilities, the Apple TV's role as an AirPlay receiver makes perfect sense, but using the Apple TV as an AirPlay broadcaster seems like a rather limited use case.

Apple TV 3

Apple TVs of the second and third-gen variety are getting update 5.1 today, which brings two long-awaited features. Both shared photo streaming and iTunes account switching are now part of Apple's set-top box -- the combination of those two finally freeing parents from the potential nightmare of discovering their child's "not safe for parents" photo streams, of course.

News - Netflix Announces Integrated iTunes Payment and 1080p Streaming for New Apple TV

Netflix has stepped up to catch a bit of Apple's spotlight with a couple of announcements to accompany the new Apple TV. The first announcement is that it will now be possible to sign-up for Netflix on the Apple TV and pay for the subscription through an iTunes account. To be fair, this new billing arrangement will also be enabled on 2nd-generation Apple TV devices via a software update, but only the new 3rd-generation devices will be able to take advantage of Netflix's second announcement. The new Apple TV will be able to stream Netflix content in 1080p and Dolby Digital 5.1.

Apple TV Netflix

Starting today, you can sign-up for Netflix directly on your Apple TV and pay via your iTunes account. Plus, with the new third generation Apple TV, you’ll also be able to watch thousands of hours of great movies and television streaming on Netflix in 1080p high definition and with room-filling Dolby Digital 5.1 audio.

News - Apple Announces New Apple TV with 1080p and Revamped Interface

New Apple TV

As expected, Apple had some big announcements to make today. Of course, most of the attention over the last few months has been focused on the new iPad, but for many of us here at Missing Remote, the new Apple TV may prove the more interesting device.  The new model adds 1080p support and a revamped interface that brings it more in line with the other iOS devices with new app icons and a cover flow presentation. Unfortunately, it does not look like we are going to get access to any new apps at this point or access to the rest of the App Store. Apple has also added iCloud access to movies purchased from iTunes for the new Apple TV. The new version appears to have the same form factor and will be available on March 16th for $99, with pre-ordering beginning today.

News - Rumor: New Apple TV and 1080p iTunes Store Content Inbound

Way back in November, quiet rumors began to circulate that there might be a new Apple TV on the way. The primary evidence was that some retailers had begun to sell the Apple TV for less than Apple's MSRP. Since then, the denizens of the Interwebs have been preoccupied with whipping themselves into a frenzy about the iPad 3 and the mythical iTV. With the iPad 3 announcement now expected in early March, Apple rumormongers have evidently decided to look around and see if there is any evidence that Apple might be planning to offer up a side dish and have alit on the iTunes Store and the Apple TV. The latest rumors suggest that Apple will launch 1080p content for the iTunes Store. If the iPad 3's Retina Display pans out, then this one seems like a near certainty at some point in the near future. Even on a 10" screen, 720p content on a 2048 x 1536 LCD panel is less than ideal. The Apple TV has been caught up in this round of rumors not only because a refreshed unit would also benefit from 1080p content, but because there is a whole bunch of circumstantial evidence that the second generation Apple TV, now being listed by some retailers as the 2010 model, is in short supply in the retail channel.

Apple TV

In addition to the expected announcement of the iPad 3 at a media event in early March, new rumors and speculation suggest that we could see a revised Apple TV alongside the new tablet. Shortages of the current Apple TV and the possibility of 1080p iTunes content are fueling the refresh rumors.

The update includes the usual array of bug fixes and performance improvements. There are new features, including support for folder based organization and several new languages. The big new feature will be an option to backup your firmware. The next version of Seas0nPass will integrate with this functionality to allow users to backup and restore to the firmware of their choosing. News - Running iOS Apps on Apple TV Demonstrated

When FireCore recently updated their Seas0nPass tool to support untethered jailbreaking, we noted that there was some indication in the community that work to allow the Apple TV to run iPad and iPhone apps was progressing. Evidently that was understating the situation as there is now a full-fledged hack to allow iOS apps to run on the Apple TV. Steve Toughton-Smith and Nick "The Mudkip" have put together a system that allows the Apple TV to load an iPad emulator and a custom home screen. Adding support for the Apple TV remote takes some extra work on the part of the app developer and the hack's creators are warning not to try uploading modified apps to the App Store, so we are not going to see widespread support coming soon, but hopefully Steve and Nick will get their wish and we are getting a peek at what official Apple support for Apple TV apps might look like.

Apple TV Launcher

The wily hacker hopes that his hack might nudge Apple towards building a bonafide app store for the TV box. "Remember how the unofficial iPhone apps back in '07 forced Apple's hand in creating an App Store?" he tweeted. On iPhone, jailbreakers got access to downloadable games and apps like Lights Off months before Apple opened its own iOS App Store. "I'd like Apple TV to get the same treatment."

News - Seas0nPass Updated to Support Untethered Jailbreaking

Seas0nPassSeas0nPass, the popular Apple TV jailbreaking tool, has received a special update allowing for untethered jailbreaks, a feature that had been lacking over the last several versions. By itself, this isn't necessarily big news, but evidently there is a lot going on in the Apple TV jailbreak scene right now. There is word of a new Plex beta and even some early hints of tools that allow for iOS apps to run on a jailbroken Apple TV.

Now that pod2g has done the heavy lifting and released an untethered jailbreak for iOS5, the Seas0NPass tool has been updated for your untethered jailbreaking pleasure on Apple TVs running even the latest 4.4.4 update.

News - Apple Prepping to Launch 32" and 37" Televisions?

Apple TV

In the wake of Steve Jobs's death and the release of his biography, the Internet started to light up with rumors that Apple was in the process of building a genuine television. Such rumors were not new, so beyond reporting on the intriguing passage from Walter Isaacson's biography that initially stirred things up, I have been generally reluctant to follow up on the swirl of rumors that have come since, particularly given that so many of the rumors have emanated from less than reliable analysts and certain journalistic endeavors with a history of, well, let's be honest, Apple cheerleading. However, when a source as tapped into Taiwan's manufacturing scene as Digitimes starts reporting on specific manufacturers and parts moving though the supply chain, it might be time to acknowledge that Apple may well be getting ready to make its move into the most prominent consumer electronics market of them all. Is anyone ready to start laying on bets for an iTV?

The supply chain of Apple will start preparing materials for iTV sets in the first quarter of 2012 in order to meet Apple's schedule to launch the new display products in the second or the third quarter of 2012, according to industry sources.
