News - What's The Best Fitness Tracker

I've been thinking a lot about finally grabbing a fitness tracker this holiday season, but I'm struggling to figure out which one really suites my needs. If you have experience with one of the shortlist, or have a suggestion that isn't on it - I'd love to hear your thoughts.

News - Triple M.2 x4 RAID!!! AT Reviews ASRock Z170 Extreme7+

$240 is a lot to pay for a consumer level motherboard, but the brain melting amount of I/O throughput available from three M.2 x4 RAID SSDs would make for an amazing server. Have to wonder though, outside of server user (VHD, database, etc.) where would the consumer space benefit from that much throughput? Yes, most computing is I/O limited now, but is it THAT I/O limited?

News - Why Is UHD BD Important?

Streaming is winning the format war, but that doesn't mean that Blu-ray is down-and-out. In fact, there's a [last gasp] effort to update the format to support 4K (UHD) and HDR - with Tech Rader making a case for why it's important. I get their arguments, as they are essentially the same as the apology for 1080p Blu-ray (looks better, don't need good Internet, etc.), and I'm personally sympathetic. I just don't know that there's really any wider support in the market for another round of expensive players + updated title releases. I could be wrong, and even falling prey to personal experience bias.

What do you all think? Does Ultra HD Blu-ray have a chance? Would you do another round of physical media upgrades?

News - Deal Alert: 3rd Gen Nest + $50 Amazon Gift Card For $249

Not sure how I feel about posting deals, but $249 for a Nest ($249) and a $50 Amazon gift card is a killer deal if you're in the market for a Nest.

For some reason I can't deep link the deal, so make sure to select it before checking out.

News - HTR Reviews Artison RCC Nano 1 Subwoofer

Speakers work by moving air. For a subwoofer to be any good, it needs to move a lot of air, right? With this in mind, I was pretty skeptical about how well a 7.5x8x9" sub could do anything more than tickle. But like a lot of things, how well something works depends significantly on how you plan to use it, so it looks like this cute little guy does a decent job (properly caveated).

News - SiliconDust Posts HDHR DVR November Update

The main point of interest looks to be news that the Windows Universal App should be in the store in the next seven days or so, but there are a few more including news for Android and updates to the current VIEW app. It's hard to be patient Smile.

News - IZON Begins Selling 50" & 65" Glasses Free 3D 4K TV

I've stopped by the Stream TV booth at CES a few times, and TBH never left that impressed with their glasses free 3D tech. Now that could be because I mainly saw it in the digital signage application, and when it was on a consumer type display the resolution wasn't high enough to provide a decent experience (similar to the image shredding that is apparent in passive 1080p 3D, but worse). Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to make it to CES in January so I won’t have the chance to see for myself if putting more pixels behind this tech nets the same transformative benefit that is does for passive. All that said, I really hope that Stream TV (or someone else) can bring 3D back into the discussion – even with glasses, with the right content 3D simply provides a better, more immersive viewing experience.

Also, I found the PR (after the click) base on a tweet from @relisberg where he blogged about his experience with the company. If you're interested in some more detail you should check out his post.

News - NETGEAR Costumes Arlo

If I'm honest, my first impression wasn't kind to the idea of skins for an Arlo camera, but after thinking on it a bit I've really come around to the idea. One of the drawbacks to the device is that you can have any color you want, as long as it's shiny and white - this changes that. Whether you want a bit more discression, contrast, or just want a nice costume for your camera Smile. Although, I am disappointed that there's no orange option.

News - PSA: AMD Has Retired All Pre-GCN GPUs

If you've been holding on to an older pre-Graphics Core Next (GCN) GPU, AMD has finally EOL'd driver support for these chips. It's a bit difficult to determine just from the name of the GPU which set have been put out to pasture due to AMD's bizarre moniker recycling scheme, but the gist of it is that if your card is more than three years old, you're out in the cold. AT has a bit more detail on the breakdown...

News - Plex Media Optimizer

It's not a new idea, but for those with enough of space, it is a good one. Pre-transcoding takes the real-time burden off of your system, which can make a huge difference for slower systems.
