News - Streacom's FC10 and Nano150: Building a Fanless Ivy Bridge HTPC

We reviewed the Streacom FC5 chassis a while back and really loved the ability to build our own passively cooled HTPC systems. Well they're at it again with the FC9 and FC10 models with some modified features and abilities to support the latest and greatest. Looks like the changes were good and the system can still be run almost completely silent still, which is...expected.

The Streacom offerings introduced in May also included the FC9 which supports mITX and uATX motherboards. However, the FC9 supports half-height PCIe cards only. The FC10, on the other hand, supports up to two full height PCIe cards. Hence, we took the decision to go in for the FC10 despite our plans to use a mITX motherboard.

News - Beta Roundup: XBMC 12 RC1, XBMC Live RC1, OpenELEC 3.0 Beta 5, MediaPortal 1.3.0 Beta, Xbian.org Beta

Beta RibbonIn our last Beta Roundup, I lamented the challenges of keeping up with new releases, and the last week has proven just how true that can be. Not only have the XBMC and OpenELEC teams been busy this week, so have the MediaPortal and Xbian teams.

XBMC 12 "Frodo" is coming periously close to a full release with the introduction of Release Candidate 1. As a release candidate, XBMC 12 RC1 is feature complete, so anyone holding off on a download in hopes of seeing everything that XBMC 12 will have to offer, now is the time jump in. There are still bugs to work out, but the forums are open to help and the XBMC team is taking tickets on Trac.

At this point, XBMC 12 is entirely feature complete. All changes from this point forward will exclusively include fixes for replicable bugs necessary to reach final release.

XBMC

Of course, no XBMC project would be complete with a Live version. As with the XBMC 11 beta cycle, the Live release has been running a bit under the radar compared to the mainline, but that changed with the release of XBMC Live 9.04 "Babylon" RC1. With native MCE remote support and duduke's usplash theme for seamless visual startups, the next version of XBMC Live is looking quite nice.

Finally, the XBMC repositories sources are already configured and topfs2’s cool script “Aptitude” is included, so updating XBMC to follow the new releases will hopefully be easy!

XBMC

Continuing their lockstep development cycle with XBMC, the OpenELEC team dropped Beta 5 of OpenELEC 3.0. The OpenELEC team may not be ready to declare release candidate status, but given their rapid progression, it probably isn't far off.

This Beta updates XBMC to XBMC Frodo Release Candidate 1, and fixes some issues found in our Beta 4 release like the issue where all our Addons are marked as "broken".

OpenELEC

The big new beta release of the week came courtesy of the MediaPortal team. MediaPortal 1.3.0 Beta is now available. MediaPortal 1.3.0 Beta brings new preloaded skins, including the highly anticipated Titan skin, preliminary Windows 8 support, and a greatly improved "Settings" section that allows users to change most of the client settings from within the MediaPortal 10ft interface. Unfortunately, this capablility does not extend to the TV Server settings, but there is alway 1.4.0 to look forward to.

Just in time for the holidays, we release theBeta Versionof our new major release,MediaPortal 1.3.0!

A lot has changed since the release of MediaPortal 1.2.3. Too much to fit everything into one news. So we will focus on what has changed since the 1.3.0 Alpha release. If you want to find out what was added in the 1.3.0 Alpha release, head over to it's release news, or view all the changes in our wiki: What's New > 1.3.x

MediaPortal

Our last beta for this week's roundup is a bit off the beaten path. Xbian, one of the larger XBMC for Raspberry Pi projects, is getting a new website, and the Xbian team is inviting users to beta test the new site. The new site represents a significant overhaul, so if you have a few minutes, head over and click around and let the Xbian team know if something doesn't work.

XBian is developing a new website that might replace the current one. There are still some things to work out, but we would like to receive some feedback in the proces. Please have a look at Xbian.org Beta

News - Bluetooth Keyboard Support Likely Coming to Apple TV

Bluetooth Apple TVA beta software update for the Apple TV has added an intriguing new feature in the form of Bluetooth keyboard support. Reportedly, beta testers are able to pair any Bluetooth keyboard with their Apple TV for text input and menu navigation. While the included remote provides all the control necessary to take advantage of the Apple TV, the addition of keyboard support would certainly be a nice option. Of course, the addition of Bluetooth keyboard support also raises the potential that might be unlocked if Apple takes the next logical step and provides support for other input devices that would allow for voice control and input or, combined with the long desired addition of apps, transform the Apple TV into an entry-level game console. Given the efforts that competitors such as Microsoft are making to add new features and services for their devices, it would make sense that Apple will need to start adding new capabilities if they ever want to take the Apple TV past the hobby phase.

Specifically, the beta for Apple TV being tested by registered developers right now adds Bluetooth support to Apple’s set top streamer, making it possible to pair keyboards to the device for much easier text entry and streamlined navigation. But it could open the doors for much more to follow, and gamers could be a group that especially benefits from the changes.

News - Ceton Patches Echo's Interlaced Video Issue

Ceton Echo

I knew that Ceton would fix the issues with the Echo, but I did not expect the to make up ground as quickly as they have. While there is still some work to do, what is probably the most serious issue with the Windows Media Extender seems to be fixed in the latest (2012.1212.1449) firmware currently making it's way through validation. I've tested a few 1080i (interlaced) files so far, and it's looking good (literally) for both WMC TV viewing and the Echo.

News - Beta Roundup: XBMC 12 Beta 3 and OpenELEC 3.0 Beta 4

The best part about beta software is getting access to exciting new features, even if they aren't always ready for primetime. The worst part is trying to keep up as new releases get pushed out. The XBMC team dropped the first beta for XBMC 12 "Frodo" in mid-November, but over the last week-and-a-half, have moved through Beta 2 onto Beta 3. The Beta 2 release brought a bunch of fixes and the first Android APK release of XBMC, which immediately got me contemplating the future of an XBMC-enabled Ceton Echo. Beta 3 includes more fixes, particularly for the aforementioned Android release, and the inclusion of the new PVR addons. Documentation for XBMC 12 has also taken a giant leap forward in the last week, with new FAQs and support wiki pages coming online and getting fleshed out.

Hot on the heels of Beta 2, we are excited to release Beta 3. This release includes a number of fixes as we work to resolve issues that have cropped up since Beta 2 and also attempt to isolate some issues that still exist.

XBMC

Running parallel with the XBMC team, the OpenELEC team has been working furiously on the release of the Frodo-powered OpenELEC 3.0. We commented on the rapid transition from OpenELEC 2.0 to OpenELEC 3.0 when the first beta release came out a few weeks ago, and the OpenELEC team isn't showing any signs of slowing down as they have already advanced to Beta 4. The second beta release incorporated OpenELEC-specific bug fixes, while the two more recent beta release have included bug fixes and provided updates to new Linux kernel point releases and the latest beta releases of XBMC 12.

This Beta updates XBMC to XBMC Frodo Beta 3, the kernel to linux-3.6.9 and fixes some issues found in our Beta 3 release like Samba Windows filesharing issues and issues with ffmpeg which is now fixed after a closed cooperation with the ffmpeg developers upstream too. Many thanks for the help!

OpenELEC

It's also worth noting that the OpenELEC team is promoting the Raspberry Pi support that comes with OpenELEC 3.0 by teaming up with The Pi Hut for a giveaway, so if you are interested in getting your diminutive DIY media streamer action on, be sure to throw your name in the social network hat.

News - Xbox 360 Gains 10 New Apps, 40 More by Spring 2013

Microsoft has announced the arrival of 10 new entertainment and content apps for the Xbox 360 as part of their plan to take over the living room via the game console. The new SkyDrive app, which serves up photos and videos stored on a user's SkyDrive account, is the only app that will be available across all regions. The other nine apps, which include access to content providers such as Maxim, VEVO, CinemaNow, and CNET, are either launching in or expanding into specific territories. Today's new apps are just beginning, as Microsoft has also announced that they have another 40 apps on tap for early 2013 that will add content from providers such as PBS, Flixster, CW, and Slacker Radio. To date, no media streamer has offered the breadth of providers and feeds that Roku has been able to put together, but it would seem that Microsoft has plans to change things.

The Xbox 360 is being overrun by apps, following the model established by Windows 8and Windows Phone. Today, Microsoft announced 10 new apps. And over 40 more are coming in early 2013.

News - QNAP Adds DVR and Live TV Streaming Capabilities to Turbo NAS Devices

If you live in a DVB-T region and are in the market for a new NAS, then QNAP would like to have a word with you. QNAP recently introduced a new feature, TV Station, to their Tubo NAS line-up that allows their NAS devices to serve as a DVR and to stream live TV to connected clients. TV Station is availble through QPKG, QNAP's add-on management system. The add-on's functionality is still fairly limited at this point, restricted as it is to USB DVB-T tuners and an over-the-air EPG, and only supporting streaming to browsers on Windows with the assistance of VLC, but it is still an interesting addition to QNAP's growing portfolio of media serving add-ons.

 QNAP TV Station

NAS specialist QNAP this week announced a brand new feature for its latest range of network attached storage servers. Add a USB DVB-T TV tuner, and your QNAP NAS will take on DVR responsibilities, streaming live and recorded TV to multiple clients arounf [sic] the home.

News - Ceton Extends Echo Return & Warrantey Periods

Ceton Echo

In what must be an attempt to define a B-School case study in how to triage a product launch, Ceton announced today that they are extending the return period to 90 days for everyone who buys an Echo before January 1, 2013, doubling the warranty to two years and defining the purchase date for beta participants as November 26 - giving everyone until the end of February to make up their mind on the Windows Media Center Extender. Obviously this buys them more time to get everything working right, but it's also fantastic to see a company being honest and putting the customer first.

That level of customer passion is a precious asset to attain and even more valuable to hold on to.  We know the launch of the Echo hasn’t lived up to the standards you expect of us and that we set for ourselves.  We won’t make excuses or try to spin a story about new typical new product glitches.  The bottom line is that the Echo isn’t performing to the level we expect and we want you to know that we stand behind our products and are working non-stop to make things better.  Those of you who have had an Echo since the beta program have seen us roll out some significant improvements over the last few weeks but we’re not yet where we want to be in terms of performance, stability and features.  We’re confident that, in the end, everyone who purchased an Echo will be glad they did.

News - Silicondust Shows Of HDHR PRIME DLNA with XBMC

A few days ago Silicondust annouced that the HDHomeRun PRIME would act as a DLNA DMS, well now they've posted a demo to Youtube showing off how it works with XBMC. Now, obviously this will only work with live CopyFreely content, but it should be an easy step from here to adding PVR functionality via XBMC's PVR addin.

News - Ceton Blogs - State of the Echo

It's great when a product launch goes perfectly, but it doesn't always and what separates a good company from the rest is how well they handle the criticism and communicate with their customers. In this case it's Ceton who is having to talk Echo - and I think they did a great job outlining the current issues. Unfortunately, there isn't a timeline for when the most serious set will be resolved though. Head over to their blog for the full post.

The Echo may look like a tiny, seemingly-simple device but in reality it’s a large and complex project.  It involves hundreds of different components, many of them custom-designed by us, from dozens of partners around the world.  Like any complex project, it’s a significant effort to make sure all the pieces come together at the same time in order to have a flawless launch.  Despite our best efforts, we know now that we didn't achieve that in this case.  While we think the Echo is a good product today, the team has been working around the clock to make it the great product we know our customers demand and that we demand of ourselves.

News - Silicondust Certifies HDHomeRun as DLNA LiveTV Digital Media Server (DMS)

HDHR PRIMEBeing able to access TV content from a Silicondust HDHomeRun (HDHR) tuner over the network in a variety of applications and devices isn't a new feature, but the list will grow in a really slick way when the firmware enabling DLNA access to HDHR TV streams drops. With the PRIME model providing support for the connected media scheme your full cable lineup will be available from the Digital Cable Tuner, albeit DTCP-IP is required for Copy-Once content. Unfortunately, MPEG-2 support is required so this leaves most tablets and phones out of the party but it should be easier to build a DVR on the platform than using the current DRI method.

Interestingly the full PR (click through) indicates that this is part of a larger effort by Silicondust to provide Live TV around the house as part of "Project:Connect". More details are promised at CES; we will be making sure to stop by their booth to check it out and hopefully suss out what the long term goal is.

Review - Ceton Echo Windows Media Extender

Ceton EchoFor Windows 7 Media Center (WMC) users the Xbox 360 has long been the only actively produced choice to extend the experience to multiple TVs--until the Ceton Echo Extender for Windows Media Extender (MCX) hit the market. When we first saw the Echo it was a very different device, driven by an Intel Atom based system on a chip (SoC), and subsequently a larger and hungrier device than what we have today. The form factor has changed significantly as well, to a sleek device around the size of most modern home theater “streamers,” but the functionality promised (i.e. small, quiet, efficient MCX) when used with WMC has not. This is an important point to note when examining the Echo on its own, because much of the previous coverage also included mention of Ceton’s Q (a TiVo like device) which, had it survived the summer, could have provided additional capability beyond what is possible from the standard MCX experience.  With firmware releases bringing new functionality and fixes every few days it has proved difficult to nail down a definitive snapshot of the Echo’s long term capabilities; as retail availability is now upon us it is time to build on our first look and provide a current state update for the device.

News - The Case for Plasma vs LED/LCD HDTV

With so many holiday deals around these days, lots of us are evaluating what's the right new television to purchase. While everyone's budget and needs are different, there is some good information here that addresses some of the often quoted rumors in regards to the neverending debate between plasma and LCD televisions.

Contrast ratio is also the greatest difference between displays of any type. Detail, noise, color, and other aspects of picture quality have all gotten very good in the past few years. Contrast ratio has gotten better as well, but not to the same extent. There’s still a wide discrepancy.

News - Fractal Design Node 605 HTPC Chassis Review

Fractal Design has seemingly come out of nowhere and made some pretty sexy and quiet chassis. In the past, we've reviewed their 3000 and Define R4 and been thoroughly impressed. With their Node 605, they attempt to succeed in a space that's been difficult to break. The slick HTPC-style chassis has a hidden panel to cover the USB ports and optical drive.

Fractal Design are well known for their slick styling, solid build quality and premium performance and I no doubt that the Node 605 will offer anything less. The chassis is priced at around £110, which isn’t cheap but it is in line with the competition for similar chassis solutions. Fractal aren’t known for their cheap prices but as we’ve seen in the Node 304 and the Define R4 you get great value for money in terms of the three big aspects of style, quality and performance.
