News - SiliconDust Phase 2 with New Hardware with Hardware Transcoding

HDHomeRun Prime

Phase 2 of the SiliconDust announcements this morning are new hardward for US and a new device for Europe and Australia that now have hardware transcoding built-in. These will have high quality digital-to-digital conversion of high-bandwidth MPEG2 streams to bandwidth-friendly H.264.

“The next generation HDHomeRun® devices will do what no other TV tuner has been able to do before,” said Theodore Head, President and CEO of SiliconDust USA. “The HDHR4 devices will continue to be multi-tuner and network attached but with the ability to hardware transcode and support virtually any screen on the home network.”

The new device will server as a live TV Digital Media Server (DMS) for mobile devices, game consoles, and smart TVs.

These devices will be avalible mid-2013 and are on display at CES with some pictures coming soon.

“The HDHR4 implements the DLNA DMS Tuner Profile with transcode,” said Nicholas Kelsey, Founder and CTO of SiliconDust USA. “Soon you will be watching broadcast and cable television in high definition on all the smart screens in your home.”

News - Sony Press Conference

Oddly enough the Sony PR event was the best of the day. They definitely had the best TVs (although not the largest) to show off; announcing a 55" and 65" 4K display at "more affordable pricing" and showing of a [smallish] 56" 4K OLED TV prototype. With so much focus on 4K, it was also great to see that they are priming the content engine with a 4K download service launching somtime this summer. Having seen 4K up close it's really hard for me not to see it as a very compelling next step in consumer displays. We'll definitely have more pictures of the 4K displays from Sony and other OEMs as the show progresses.

News - DISH Network Press Conference

The thing I like most about DISH Networks events is how they announce features that we HTPC enthusiasts have enjoyed for years. Things like commercial skipping, connected and disconnected place shifting are nothing new to us, but of course they are major innovations to mainstream users, especially to those where the DVR is a new innovation. DISH adding these features not only serves to validate the use cases (not that this is necessary) and shows that they aren't afraid to add value to their ecosystem, even if it causes them some grief.

DISH was up front about their goal - how to top the Hopper. While it took them longer than it should have to announce how they did it, I do think they did it by adding Sling (server) to the hopper and Dish Transfers providing disconnected place shifting (i.e. old school transcode the file and take it with you). Enabling a realistic model where it is possible to actually view all of your TV content anywhere - either via IP or some foresight.

News - NETGEAR Press Conference

NETGEAR had a little something for the connected home enthusiast at their PR event today. Adding Sling to the NeoTV MAX was neat, but unless you have a Sling box it wasn't nearly as interesting as the NeoTV PRIME. While I have to question the name (don't we have enough PRIME devices out there?), their implementation of Google TV did look interesting - especially as that product matures with Google Play, a full implementation of Chrome and OTT services like Amazon Video and Netflix.

For those dabbling in home automation, the VUEZONE looked pretty slick because of its zero touch installation. The battery operated, wireless camera can be had with night vision and a weather guard so much easier than figuring out a more traditional security camera install. It will be interesting to see how easy it is to pull the video off the devices (it's "cloud" backed) but still very cool.

If you need a wireless extender, NETGEAR had something for you as well with a slim DLNA audio/AirPlay repeater announced as well.

News - Sharp Press Conference

Where Panasonic didn't want to talk display tech, Sharp was all about the advancements they'd made in the last year to make bigger, brighter & better consumer displays. The IGZO process, codeveloped with Corning, is the main driver of this year's top-of-the-line TVs -which top out at 90". If that's too big they are also selling 80, 70 & 60" 1080p displays as well boasting technologies like Super Bright and Quatron (which as a side effect of adding a fourth, yellow, pixel also adds brightness) to make their displays more vivid.

News - Panasonic Press Conference

Panasonic isn't known for putting on flashy press conferences, so expectations around the entertainment quality of the demos and product announcements were set appropriately low. Unfortunately even with a low bar there were several disappointments with the TVs announced today, first they aren't getting any bigger (still maxing out at 65") and details were very sparse on any of the 32 displays announced - although it looks like the lost-in-the-middle GT was sacrificed and a new range topping ZT introduced. I'm hoping that its "Beyond the Reference" picture quality will more than make up for the lack of details and advancement in real estate.

Click through to check out the photos from the event and shudder with the knowledge that most of the time spent talking about TVs was dedicated to Youtube and Home Shopping Network integration - bleh.

Blog - DMZ + HSS CES Meetup

We'll have some boots on the ground at this CES 2013, if you'll be there too make sure to stop by the DMZ + HSS CES 2013 Meetup. I will be.

We’ll be meeting in the Marriott Courtyard Bistro lounge at the Courtyard hotel immediately across the street from the convention center. If you’ve attended CES before, you know what a hassle it is to grab transportation once the show floor closes. So skip the mayhem and spend an hour or so with Dave McCabe, Josh, and Richard. We’ll be less than a 10 minute walk when you leave the convention center.

Review - Intel Core i3-3220 v. Intel Core i3-3225

Intel Core i3As interesting as the third generation of Intel Core integrated processor graphics (IPG) were when they arrived in April, as home theater PC (HTPC) enthusiasts it was disappointing that the more applicable two core/four thread models were not available. We gleaned what we could about the minor processing improvements and major changes to the graphic processing unit (GPU) from the Core i7-3770K / Core i7-3770S, but as those were overkill for this space there are still many unanswered questions around how the six execution unit (EU) HD 2500 compares to sixteen EU HD 4000 and, perhaps more importantly, how 22nm Ivy Bridge (IVB) CPUs compare against the previous generation of Sandy Bridge (SNB) IPG with similar power requirements. To achieve these goals two 3.3 GHz, 55W Core i3s were tested; with only the GPU separating them – at least on the specifications sheet – let’s dig into the Intel Core i3-3220 and Intel Core i3-3225 and find out which is the better option for your next HTPC.

Blog - 2012: Looking Backwards and Forward

Well, it's that time again, 2012 is almost completely behind us. As with every year, there is a lot that's happened in the home theater world, some good, some not so good. We'd like to take a moment to reflect upon everything that happened and narrow down some of our favorites--what did we love most, what disappointed us most, and for 2013 what are we looking forward to. Hope you enjoy!

2012 Things We Loved
  • Ceton Echo & Ceton Companion
4 Watts and a Media Center Extender that will actually be supported. Frequent updates continue to make the experience better & better.
    • "having a solid media center platform that wouldn't require me to run a dedicated HTPC and have to support it day in and day out."
    • "I love the ability to quickly scan for new show premieres and manage my Windows Media Center using the Ceton Companion wherever I am."
  • Cases, Cases, Cases
It's been a great year for HTPC chassis, from tiny to huge, there has been passive low profile cases from Streacom and Wesena, and then Fractal Design and Lian Li have made some great larger cases to suit your needs. For the HTPC being dead, there sure are a lot of options to build your own!
  • Dish Hopper
It would take A LOT to get me to give up the convenience of CableCARD + HTPC, but the Hopper is a step in the right direction. Not only because it provides a decent amount of storage, but also because it's the first mainstream DVR solution that makes ads optional - something that we've enjoyed for years. Of course the studios objected, so litigation is pending, but it's nice to see some MSO validation for something so critical to how my family consumes TV.
  • Rasberry Pi
This diminutive DIY computer has stirred up a ton of interest in the maker community and among hobbyist developers. The Raspberry Pi has been pressed into service for arcade cabinets, custom routers, and even a supercomputer, but one of the most exciting applications has been to turn the Raspberry Pi into an XBMC-based media streamers. The next version of XBMC will come with official Raspberry Pi support, and with projects such as Xbian, Raspmc, and OpenELEC all in development to provide a turnkey XBMC solution, a fully-capable XBMC streamer can be had for the price of a Roku.
  • Home Automation Products
"Growth in affordable, simple and low-power home automation products that can be controlled from any computing or mobile device."

News - DirecTV Genie whole-home DVR review

We heard lots of buzz surrounding the Hopper whole home DVR service from Dish since CES, but DirecTV doesn't want to be left out of the party. While pricing and availability is still being worked out, it's nice to see some pretty significant benefits to the system over traditional and older DirecTV systems. Read on for Ben's opinions of his review.

Capable of serving up to eight rooms in your house (but only four at once), the Genie system works with a variety of setups, including being built into some newer Samsung TVs. Only available as part of DirecTV service, the Genie can be had for free by some new DirecTV customers who are willing to sign a term agreement and select the right package, and available to existing customers as an upgrade for $300 depending on the circumstances. If DirecTV didn't already have you at five tuners, 1TB and up to eight rooms, then click through for a full rundown on the latest the original direct satellite broadcast TV provider has to offer.

News - Logitech Harmony Touch Review

I've been using a Logitech Harmony remote for years and have loved to see their evolution. Of course there are drawbacks to any solution, but it looks like Logitech has improved on an already pretty solid product. Let's hope the battery/charger lasts longer.

The primary evolution of the Harmony Touch is of course the touch interface, which is centrally placed in the middle of the remote. The 2.4” touch screen is activated by touch and gives you the possibility to add the entire repertoire of functions from your existing remotes, accessible from submenus on-screen. The touch screen is also you entry to the well-known “activities” that will carry out multiple actions in a row such as turn on several devices.

News - Report: Few Using Smart TVs to Full Capacity

In the battle for the living room, I'm not at all surprised by this report from NPD. Who doesn't have a set top box, gaming console, dvd player or other device that is capable of providing additional services similar to what their televisions can offer? My TV doesn't have any, but I definitely would be among those who never use it.

While about 60 percent of Smart TV owners are using their sets to access Over-the-Top (OTT) video services, very few are taking advantage of available apps like Twitter and Facebook, or using their TVs to browse the Web, according to NPD.

News - LG Hecto Laser Projector

LG HECTO

Speaking of CES, LG has pipped themselves a bit with the announcement of their upcoming HECTO projector. While another DLP based laser projector is cool, it's not really newsworthy until discovering that this one can create a 100' 1080p display from just 22" (yes less than two feet) away from the screen. We'll make sure to swing by their booth at CES and check this guy out.

Hit up Engadget for the the PR.
