News - Jeff Atwood (aka codinghorror) Shares 2016 HTPC Config

I like it when people share their HTPC configs. It's nice to get an idea of what they're doing, and why. Jeff is a proficient blogger, and we've shared similar thought process in the past so I am always quick to have a look when he updates his setup.

IMO, his update is solid - but I find the I/O choices to be a bit odd. Especially, opting for a standard SATA SSD instead of a modern interface. Either way, have a look and if you have any thoughts, I'd love to hear them.

News - Joe Kane outlines Rec. 2020's limitations

Color me better educated. I'm not willing to pony up the $500 for the full talk, but there was still plenty of good information in this write up of Joe Kane's presentation on the limitations of Rec. 2020 in practical applications. I certainly wasn't aware that even though the standard will be used, it's impractical to actually make a display that makes it work.

News - Man laments that progress takes time, sucks for early adopters. 4K Edition.

I guess I might be a bit more sympathetic if I had a 4K display, but I doubt it. Every change takes time, heck the myriad exclusively-non-HD channels still available is testament to that. So I guess while I understand that the pace of progress is frustrating at times, it’s not surprising or frankly unexpected that the current landscape is quite limited. Either way, if you’re up for a so-so-sad vent about the state of 4K video options here’s the piece you were looking for.

News - Triple M.2 x4 RAID!!! AT Reviews ASRock Z170 Extreme7+

$240 is a lot to pay for a consumer level motherboard, but the brain melting amount of I/O throughput available from three M.2 x4 RAID SSDs would make for an amazing server. Have to wonder though, outside of server user (VHD, database, etc.) where would the consumer space benefit from that much throughput? Yes, most computing is I/O limited now, but is it THAT I/O limited?

News - Why Is UHD BD Important?

Streaming is winning the format war, but that doesn't mean that Blu-ray is down-and-out. In fact, there's a [last gasp] effort to update the format to support 4K (UHD) and HDR - with Tech Rader making a case for why it's important. I get their arguments, as they are essentially the same as the apology for 1080p Blu-ray (looks better, don't need good Internet, etc.), and I'm personally sympathetic. I just don't know that there's really any wider support in the market for another round of expensive players + updated title releases. I could be wrong, and even falling prey to personal experience bias.

What do you all think? Does Ultra HD Blu-ray have a chance? Would you do another round of physical media upgrades?

News - HTR Reviews Artison RCC Nano 1 Subwoofer

Speakers work by moving air. For a subwoofer to be any good, it needs to move a lot of air, right? With this in mind, I was pretty skeptical about how well a 7.5x8x9" sub could do anything more than tickle. But like a lot of things, how well something works depends significantly on how you plan to use it, so it looks like this cute little guy does a decent job (properly caveated).
