News - Microsoft Releases Kinect Nat Geo TV and Kinect Sesame Street, Hires Former CBS President for Original Xbox Video Content

Kinect Sesame Street and Nancy Tellem

Microsoft has been busy over the last year revamping the Xbox 360 interface to make way for the Xbox Live TV initiative that has seen dozens of new streaming media services added to the Xbox dashboard. Even as Microsoft was looking to use a Metro-flavored UI to turn the Xbox into the center of living room entertainment, Microsoft was starting to look forward to the future of television on the Xbox. Today, two aspects of that future vision took big steps forward.

First up, we have the move toward interactive television. Back in October, Micorosft held a press conference to take the wraps off a project intended to change the nature of watching television on the Xbox 360 by showing off versions of Sesame Street and National Geographic that children could not only watch, but interact with through the use of Kinect. It took 11 months, but Kinect Sesame Street and Kinect Nat Geo TV finally launched today for $29.99 each. In addition to the episodes and clips that come on the disc, you receive a one year Season Pass for new episodes and clips.

I have to say though, the best part about the game was living as an animal. Each video has a set of mini-games (which can be selected and all played from the main menu) where you become the animal and have to perform general survival tasks. Kinect does a good job here not going nuts when someone walks behind you (as in many other Kinect games) and keeping your animal facade on. Whether it be bears, owls, wolves, rams, panthers or wolverines, your head and arms become that of the animal.

Wired

The other aspect of Microsoft plans that moved forward today was the company's ambition to begin producing original video content for Xbox Live. The last we had heard of the project, Microsoft was supposedly talking up some former NBC executives, but Microsoft must have realized that anyone who helped steer that ship aground was probably not a good bet, so instead the company has hired Nancy Tellem, former president of CBS Network Television Entertainment Group. As the newly christened Entertainment and Digital Media president, Tellem has been charged with overseeing the launch of a production studio in Los Angeles to focus on creating content for the Xbox.

"I look forward to building a studio team that embraces the challenges of creating true interactive content that the Xbox platform supports and to work with talent to create content that will change the way entertainment content is experienced and delivered," Tellem said in the press release.

"We are embarking on a new chapter with the creation of a studio dedicated to making original interactive and linear content, and I'm excited to have Nancy leading this effort," Microsoft corporate VP Phil Spencer also added.

News - Synology Introduces DiskStation DS413 NAS Server Device

Synology today announced the arrival of their newest 4-bay NAS, the DiskStation DS413. The DS413 utilizes a Freescale processor and 1GB of RAM with the promise not to consume more than 36W under full load. In addition to supporting up to 16TB through the internal drive bays, the DS413 also sports a couple USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port and an eSATA port. I might recommend holding onto at least the USB 2.0 port for a printer. Synology doesn't call their DiskStations NAS servers for nothing. Out of the box the DS413 offers centralized desktop backups and has an integrated print server, mail server, and web server along with more than a dozen other optional packages to extend the device's server functionality. The DiskStation 413 looks like it could be a versatile and powerful option for a home server, though at $530 it is definitely a bit pricey compared to the more consumer-focused DS413j that the company announced a couple of weeks ago.

Synology Inc. today launched DiskStation DS413, a 4-bay NAS server that incorporates the latest technologies to minimize power consumption. It is well-suited for small and medium-sized businesses to centralize data backups and synchronize files across different platforms with minimum time and effort.

Review - Mini Z-Wave Device Review

Z-WaveIn our recent review of Micasaverde’s Vera home automation (HA) controller several devices were mentioned, but not in enough detail to be useful to anyone thinking about building a Z-Wave network, or adding to an existing one. To address that a list of all the devices and a mini review is included below:

News - Lian LI PC-Q16 Mini-ITX Case Reviews

Lian Li PC-Q16

Lian Li has built a reputation for quality and design with their aluminum cases over the years and the company has consistently been one of the biggest supporters of the Mini-ITX format. The Lian Li PC-Q16 is one of their cube-style Mini-ITX cases. To help trim a bit off the case's girth, the PC-Q16 forgoes an ODD slot of any sort, but still manages to leave room for a 3.5" HDD and three 2.5" HDDs. The Q16 is definitely intended to be a looker with its brushed alumimnum and clean front face, Some folks will probably be dissappointed that there is no option for adding a flash reader and the lack of internal Blu-Ray options, but there are USB 3.0 ports to help make up for it. The PC-Q16 is definitely a tighter squeeze internally than some of the other Mini-ITX cases grabbing headlines over the last few months, but it looks like there might be a fair trade of function for form in this particualr case.

Companies have been making computers and cases that will blend in with other home theatre items such as a reciever or DVD player. Lian Li is no exception and have put out quite a few great looking HTPC cases for MATX and ITX sized motherboards. They were kind enough to send the PC-Q16 case for us to review.

News - Nintendo TVii Brings Live TV, DVR, Streaming Media and Second Screen Control to the Wii U

 Nintendo TVii

At E3 this year, Nintendo was beginning to open up a bit about what to expect from the Wii U other than playing video games. At the time, the company was assuring gamers that the Wii U would have access to Netflix, Hulu Plus, and all of the other streaming media services that game consoles are now expected to offer, and that the Wii U GamePad would offer some sort of TV control funtionality. In their official launch press conference this week, Nintendo took the wraps off of Nintendo TVii, a service that allows Wii U users to watch TV via the Wii U and to control their viewing experience with the Wii U GamePad.

As part of its Wii U conference, Nintendo has revealed Nintendo TVii. Nintendo president Reggie Fils-Aime introduced the service, which will allow users to watch movies, sports and television via the Wii U. The service includes social features, allowing viewers to connect with other Wii U users via Twitter, Facebook and other services.

Joystiq

Although announced and official, complete with upbeat promo video, there are still alot of details to be fleshed out. We do know that the Wii U GamePad serves as the control point for all of this functionality with a user profile customized program guide that pulls from TV listings, services like the aforementioned Netflix and Hulu, and from recordings on your TiVo. The GamePad also offers full QWERTY text input or a radial keyboard that comes up out of the lower right hand corner of the screen, which should come in handy for utilizing the universal, cross-platform browsing and search. We also know that Nintendo TVii is powered by technology from i.TV, a company that focuses on developing second screen control apps for mobile devices.

Brad Pelo is suddenly in charge of a major Nintendo initiative for the Japanese company's next big console, the Wii U, despite not being an employee at Nintendo. Instead, Pelo is CEO of i.TV -- a "social television and second screen technology company" that's worked with everyone from Entertainment Weekly to Engadget parent company AOL -- and he's the man responsible for Nintendo TVii.

Engadget

What we don't know is exactly how all of these pieces work together. The streaming media components are fairly straightforward, but the details about the TV and DVR control are still a bit vague. For the TV side, Nintendo has already talked about using the IR-blaster in the GamePad to control a TV, but Nintendo still has not shared any details about how this universal remote control functionality will be programmed or how exensive it will be. As for the DVR functionality, Nintendo has clarified since the press conference that the Wii U does not have any TiVo hardware built-in, so one would need to own a TiVo, but there are still no details about how the Wii U connects to the TiVo or whether intermediary hardware such as the TiVo Stream will be necessary. There has also been some debate about whether the DVR interactions are exclusive to TiVo. The TiVo logo is in the press materials, but Nintendo has also been fairly specific to use the more generic term, "DVR", rather than TiVo when talking about the ability to playback recorded TV. If Nintendo can make TVii flexible and exensible enough, the company may just have a chance to upend Sony, Microsoft, and Google in offering consumers the one living room device to rule them all, but only time will tell how all of the peices will come together.

Still, there's plenty of reason for skepticism over how well Nintendo will be able to integrate with cable and satellite DVRs. While Nintendo touted TVii's TiVo integration, other TV providers weren't mentioned, although Nintendo says it will work with all major cable and satellite providers, plus over-the-air broadcasts.

News - ZOTAC ZBOX Nano AD12 Plus Reviewed

I am going to go out on a limb here and admit that I am a sucker for a cute, little PC. There's just something about small form factor PCs that has always caught my attention. There was a time when Shuttle was the belle of the SFF ball, but these days the field is quite a bit more crowded, and one of the companies that consistently turns heads is ZOTAC with their ZBOX lineup of mini-PCs. The ZBOX Nano AD12 was just announced last month to replace the AD11 as ZOTAC's AMD representative for their next to smallest version of the ZBOX. The 2GB of RAM and 320 GB hard drive that set the Plus apart from the standard ZBOX doesn't really do much for me, but the diminutive PC itself seems to have a great deal to offer.

ZOTAC ZBOX Nano AD12

Overall the device feels quite sturdy in its casing, and flipping the unit over reveals an interesting aspect about it’s underside. The four raised legs are actually screws, which you can twist open to remove the bottom plate and expose the memory slot and hard drive if you want to do a quick hardware upgrade. The system bundles with 2GB of RAM and a 320GB 5400RPM HDD, and you can upgrade the RAM up to 8GB.

News - Vizio Co-Star Reviewed

Just when it was beginning to look like the second wave of Google TV was going to fizzle out before we could even get to the holiday shopping season due to a lack of new hardware, along came Vizio with the Google TV-powered Co-Star to rekindle interest in the platform. Vizio has taken the unusual move of only offering the $100 Co-Star online through their website, rather than taking advantage of their usual 1-2 retail power punch of Costco and Walmart, which might be part of the reason that reviews have been slow to trickle out. Fortunately, our friends at GigaOM not only put the Co-Star through its paces, but did so for an episode of Cord Cutters, so not only can we learn their opinion of Vizio's first take on Google TV, but we get to see it in action as well.

Vizio Co-Star

Vizio’s Co-Star is the company’s first Google TV device. How does it stack up to Roku, Apple TV and other media streamers, and how well does it work for cord cutters? Check out our video review for a detailed look at the device.

News - Google Fiber Bulks Up TV Channel Lineup

Fiber TV

Even before Google Fiber launched, the word started to leak that Google would be looking to offer both blazing fast Internet speeds and some sort of TV service. Sure enough, when Google Fiber finally started its launch process this summer, Google announced that they would be offering an IPTV subscription service on top of the Internet service offerings, and while an interesting move, the intial channel lineup had some prominent omissions. Evidently Google has been working behind the scenes to build out the fledgling service as they made two seperate announcements this week about new additions to their channel lineup. Earlier this week came word that Google TV would be receiving the full ABC/Disney/ESPN trifecta combo, along with some specialty networks such as Ovation and TBN.

Here are all the additional new channels: ABC Family, ABC News Now, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, ESPN, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN Classic, ESPN Deportes, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN2, ESPNews, ESPNU, Longhorn Network, Ovation, SOAPnet, TBN, TBN Enlace, Velocity.

TechCrunch

Not long after, Google announced the addition of the Turner family of networks, including the Cartoon Network and CNN. There may still be some notable omissions from the Google lineup that might be enough to be a deal-breaker for some folks, but it is becoming a more compelling alternative to the traditional subscription TV providers.

Just days after taking in a number of major Disney channels, the company has announced that Turner stations are now included as well. The agreement brings notable entries to the lineup, such as Cartoon Network, CNN, TBS, and TNT.

News - Ceton Companion Released to Amazon App Store, Kindle Fire

Ceton Companion on Kindle Fire

Ceton has announced that their Ceton Companion app for Windows Media Center is now available on the Amazon App Store, which is good news for Android-lovers who like to stray from the Google Play corral and for Kindle Fire owners, of which Amazon is hoping there will soon be many more. It costs the customary $4.99, and although the version on the Amazon App Store is lagging some of the other releases, an updated version is inbound. With this release, the Ceton team has rounded out their initial wave of launches. There is a Windows 8 app in the works, and I wish there was a Nook release lurking in the wings, but for now the team can turn their attention to the rapidly growing list of feature requests that the team is soliciting from the community on the Green Button.

The Ceton Companion has now been approved and is available on the Amazon App Store for $4.99

News - Hulu Plus, MAX Go, and HBO GO for iOS Add Closed Caption Support, Hulu Plus Overhauled for Playstation 3

The big iOS news of the week may have been Apple's iPhone 5 announcement and the opening of the preorder floodgates, but some big names in the streaming media business have been sneaking around releasing updates to their apps. The Hulu Plus, MAX GO, and HBO GO iOS apps have all received updates to offer support for closed captions. That this feature is only just coming to these mobile apps surprises me, even leaving aside the obvious issue of accessibility for the hearing-impaired. For one thing, these companies already deal heavily in closed captioned content, Hulu on their website, and Cinemax and HBO through their cable channels, so the need for support in their apps should not have been a surprise. On top of that, watching streaming media on a mobile device seems far more likely to put one in a noisy situation where one would desire captions to supplement the audio. Hopefully the other mobile platforms will be seeing similar updates soon.

In a move that should please the hard of hearing and anyone trying to watch a video quietly sans-headphones, the Hulu Plus, HBO Go and Max Go apps for iOS devices have all recently been updated with support for closed captions.

Engadget

Hulu Plus on PS3

Hulu wasn't devoting all of their attention to their iOS app this week. The Hulu Plus iOS update comes with more than just closed captioning support, but it is not nearly as radical an update as the Playstation 3 got his week. The Hulu Plus app for the Playstation 3 received a significant overhaul that fundamentally changes the browsing interface, slims down and simplifies the playback controls, and offers improvements to search to make accessing results easier. The greater emphasis on artwork certainly helps to make the new interface pretty, as well.

We’ve implemented a tray-style format that allows you to scroll through recommendations based on your viewing history, or check out popular shows and movies, the top 100 clips on Hulu Plus, movie trailers and more. We’ve also included a “Shows You Watch” feature that highlights the content you regularly enjoy, and lets you jump straight to the latest episode.

News - BitFenix Prodigy Reviewed

The BitFenix Prodigy Mini-ITX case has been out for a few months already, and though that might be a lifetime in tech time, the reviews keep coming. This time it's the white version on the table, and although there is no fuctional difference between the white and black versions, it's still refreshing to get such a thorough visual tour of the surprising sharp-looking white variant. White would be a bit too conspicuous for my tastes, but if you like that old-school Mac look, I suspect the white Prodigy won't disappoint. Plus, the black version seems to have become as rare as hen's teeth online lately. Hopefully this is a sign that BitFenix has struck a chord with consumers, and not just reviewers and custom builders on Ebay.

BitFenix Prodigy White

With the Prodigy, BitFenix has a compact, mini ITX compatible case in their portfolio, which is perfectly suitable to build a small but yet powerful system. Furhtermore this nice looking little case should also offer plenty of space in the interior.

Review - Mi Casa Verde Vera Home Automation Controller - VeraLite

Mi Casa VerdeHome automation (HA) covers a wide spectrum of capabilities and devices, spanning the gap from placing a light timer on the fish tank to a complex system that manages many of the mundane aspects of lighting, HVAC and scheduled activities in the house or business. Historically these highly integrated systems, capable of things like automatically dimming the lights when watching a movie, were constrained to high-end consumers due to hardware cost, complexity, and the locked-down dealer relationship between OEMs and custom installers (CI). While this works for both groups, it is blocking for those with a more limited budget – which is where the Mi Casa Verde Vera 3 and VeraLite come in. As a fully functional Z-Wave HA controller, it offers the same feature set and capabilities that more expensive options provide, but in DIY (do-it-yourself) friendly format where managing devices and scenes entails a quick browser session instead of a wallet thumping from your local CI.

News - Ceton Updates Ceton Companion Services, Releases Ceton Companion for Windows Phone

Ceton Companion for Windows Phone

Ceton released the Ceton Companion apps for iOS and Android just yesterday. Given the level of anticipation in the WMC enthusiast community for these apps, I would have thought the fine folks at Ceton had earned themselves some time off to celebrate, but evidently there is just a bit too much dedication flowing in the veins of their programmers for that. Ceton has already released some updates for their Ceton Companion Services PC software bringing it to version 12.9.6.1218 and our own Michael Whelter has taken to the comments to encourage users to keep checking as there are evidently more on the way. Ceton has also released the Windows Phone version of the Ceton Companion app. Ceton Companion is available from the Windows Phone Marketplace at the same $4.99 price point as the iOS and Android apps. We look forward to seeing what tomorrow might bring.

News - YouTube Rentals Looking to Expand to Philips Smart TVs

YouTube added movie rentals to its list of features way back in 2010, and Google has been quietly adding more studios to their library over the last year by signing deals with companies such as Disney, DreamWorks Animation, and Paramount. To date, those rentals have been restricted to the PC and the Google TV app, but it sounds like Google might be getting ready to spread the love to other Smart TV platforms. Reportedly, TPVision is anticipating that their Philips Smart TVs will be among the first to start offering YouTube movie rentals in Europe later this year. Given the overlap in function between YouTube, Google Play, and Google TV, one would think that Google would be more interested in developing a cohesive branding experience before pushing out to new platforms, but I suppose it never hurts to have another VOD service provider to choose from.

YouTube Rentals on Smart TVs

The company, which is better known for its Philips-branded TV sets, said that it will be offering YouTube rentals in “select European countries” later this year. TPVision also said that “Philips Smart TV will be among the first TV platforms” to offer access to these rentals.
