News - Linux Gets Plasma Media Center from KDE

Linux users have a new media center frontend option in the form of Plasma Media Center, a new release from KDE, the development team behind one of the more popular graphical desktop environments for Linux. PMC provides unified access to movies, photos and music across PCs, TVs, tablets and other devices capable of running KDE. The 1.0 version can access local files and network files, as well as access photos from Flickr and Picasa. PMC also includes a plug-in framework for developers to create custom plug-ins to extend PMC's functionality. The intial release might look a little barebones next to something like XBMC, but I suspect it will be a media center application worth watching.

Plasma Media Center

There is a new Media Center system for Linux users called Plasma Media Center. It’s from KDE the graphical desktop for Linux and is built on KDE’s Plasma and KDE technologies and is designed to be a rich media experience. KDE say the aim is to unify media experience on the PC,tablets, netbooks and TVs running KDE.

Review - NETGEAR NeoTV MAX (NTV300SL) Media Streamer

NETGEAR NeoTV MAX

After experiencing NETGEAR’s previous generation NeoTV NTV200, with solid function, value and distinction as one of the only media streamers with HDMI CEC support it was genuinely exciting when the NeoTV MAX (NTV300SL) arrived with a dual-sided QWERTY remote, full VUDU 3D and Netflix multichannel audio with subtitle support--that NETGEAR only asks $70 (MSRP) for the device was gravy. With the NeoTV MAX also promising 24p and continuing the tradition of seamless integration into a HDMI CEC controlled ecosystem it seems likely that NETGEAR would deliver the perfect Over the Top (OTT) streamer for the most demanding users.

Blog - Quick Look at Standout Designs Haven 72" TV Stand

Over the holidays, my wife and I purchased our first home and one of the first things that we realized was that we would need a new tv stand because of the awkward location that our tv would be in. For quite a while, I have had my eye on Standout Designs. I just never had the exuse I needed to buy one of their stands until now.

Yes - I know. I'm horrible at lighting a shot taken with my iPhone. I couldn't figure out how to get a good picture with light coming in behind the tv. I told you it was an awkward place to put it.

Over the holidays we ordered their free wood samples and found one that was the perfect match for our other furniture. Then it was a couple of week wait for the stand to arrive.

Which it did. On a giant truck. I was very happy to have splurged on the lift gate shipping option. The tv stand is heavy. Very, very, heavy. This is why you hire movers kind of heavy. Helping lift it off a 55' trailer would have been a bit much. If you have stairs, you will definitely want the white glove option.

Unpacking went smoothly. Everything was in great shape. Here's a picture of the stand from the back.

You can see the nice large fans. They spin extremely slowly so that you can't hear them and do a nice job of venting heat from the stand. There's a temperture sensor built in so that you can have them auto on/off or just switch them to on/off all the time.

News - Roku 3 Arrives with Faster Processor, New UI, & Headphones

Roku makes one of the most compelling Over the Top (OTT) streamers available today, offering oodles of content options, a clean, responsive UI, and (my favorite feature) universal search. Of course for those who want to use more than a few of the 750+ channels the current UI doesn't scale well, so now we have another reason to like the diminutive device with a new display scheme available on the new, faster, $99 Roku 3. Fortunately, older devices will also get the update, but they'll wait until April for the privilege.

PR and a pic of the updated UI after the click.

News - Onkyo Releases Fix for TX-NR818 24p Issue

As the months dragged on I was a bit concerned that the issue noted in our review of the TX-NR818 where it converted 23.976 content to 24.000 was not going to get fixed. Thankfully that is not the case because today Onkyo released a firmware update that resolves it (and a couple other issues) - Huzzah!

I've been running a beta version for a few weeks and it's been working great, so if you have a 2012 Onkyo AVR grab a USB stick and get updating.

Also, it's worth thanking Onkyo (and the people there who advocated for us) for doing the right thing here; not every company does.

News - Ceton shows off Android on the Echo and Media Center on Android

Ceton is trying to bring an integrated experience over to the Echo. They made mention that they are trying to get Android to run on the Echo. They are also trying to get Netflix integration, one of the best new coming off this announcement is trying to get Media Center to run natively in Android on the Echo.

Most interestingly, one of those changes is integrating Windows Media Center into Android, allowing users to access all the content that both platforms have to offer in a single user interface. A hefty goal indeed and one worth waiting for, but the question of when remains.

News - madVR v0.86.0 Frees HTPC Users from 3:2 Pulldown Judder

Using a HTPC isn't always the easiest way to watch content, but nothing combines the flexibility, capability and potential into a single consumption point like it does. Those that demand the highest quality often rail against the complexity required, and to be fair they have a point, but it's there and few products demonstrate this like the high quality video renderer madVR. As an HTPC advocate, I love it when new features arrive and it's even better when they are exclusive Smile.

For the techincally challenged it can be a little challenging to get madVR installed and configured, so if you fall into this group you may want to wait until the next JMC build to incorportate madVR's newest feature:

Introducing the new "smooth motion" frame rate changer (FRC) with the following main features / benefits:
(1) Can convert any source frame rate to any display refresh rate, while maintaining smooth motion.
(2) Endless playback without frame drops/repeats (if your PC is fast enough) without needing Reclock.

...

Technically the FRC algorithm simulates a display with infinite refresh rate. Which means that every video frame is displayed exactly when the timestamps ask for it. Consequently the motion smoothness depends on proper timestamps. If the timestamps (or audio clock) contain jitter, the playback will contain jitter, too. So even if Reclock might not be needed to avoid frame drops/repeats, anymore, when using madVR's new FRC algorithm, you might still want to use Reclock, because it provides a stable and reliable audio clock with very low jitter, and it supports WSAPI exclusive mode, too. You can however slave Reclock to the audio hardware clock, if you want. Having Reclock fully enabled with audio resampling is still possible, though, it shouldn't harm madVR's FRC algorithm.

To my best knowledge madVR is now the only way to playback Blu-Ray/DVD movies without 3:2 pulldown judder on displays which don't support 23.976Hz playback properly. I don't think any hardware Blu-Ray player can do that, or even any of the expensive video processors. (Correct me if I'm wrong).

Otherwise grab the latest release and have at it. I know I will (with MPC-HC) later tonight; and for those who are asking (I did) - it should run well on HD4000 GPUs.

News - How to Banish Live Tiles from Windows 8 and Bring Back the Desktop

Windows 8In my opinion Windows 8 is faster then Windows 7, and I don't mind using it, but when you are on a remote desktop of Windows 8 or running it in Hyper-V, it is less then pleasent when it comes to moving the mouse to the corners to do anything. I came across this article in PCWorld Magazine and then found it on thier site for easier click through. I have done this for mine and I am enjoying it, if I can keep it as Windows 7ish feel then I am more happier. Goodbye "Live Tiles" and hello desktop again.

In a world exploding with tablets and touchscreens, Microsoft's decision to saddle Windows 8 with the finger-friendly Modern interface formerly known as Metro makes a lot of sense—for Microsoft. But if you're among the majority of Windows users who aren't using a tablet or a touchscreen, the focus on Live Tiles and mobile-centric apps is more of a frustration than a feature. Vexingly, Windows 8 is riddled with sneaky ways to drag you out of the desktop and dump you on that shifting, shiny Start screen.

News - Dune HD TV303D Reviewed @ MediaSmartServer.net

Looks like Dune HD hit their delivery target for the TV303D, and Damien has it reviewed. The results were much more mixed than I expected from Dune HD, hopefully just teething issues with a new platform.

Overall I would say I have some mixed thoughts with the TV303D. On a positive note, network performance is excellent which is critical for anyone looking to stream HD content (especially Blu-ray 3D) over a network. However, there are some critical issues that need to be addressed. The most notable one is the DTS(MA) audio drop out issue. This falls squarely on the back of Sigma as they have been releasing chips with this bug for over a year. Hopefully now that Dune has a lot riding on the newer Sigma chips, they can pressure Sigma into providing a fix relatively quick.

News - Media Browser 3 in Beta, Coming Soon, Tons of Changes-Improvements

Media Browser has been around for a while now, providing a solution to merging your available online streaming content along with your native local software, and they're investing in some big changes. See full notes below and at the Media Browser website--it looks like it's going to be as beautiful as ever. Currently in beta, but to be released soon!

Media Browser will become a client-server application beginning with version three, and will be targeting multiple platforms. The server runs on Windows 7/8 and Windows Server 2008/2012. There are currently six client applications in development. Leading the way is Media Browser Theater, powered by VLC, which is the replacement for MB2 and runs as a stand-alone application on Windows 7/8.

Then there is the Dashboard, a web-based client, which runs in any HTML5-enabled browser. This houses the server's configuration interface and will also provide the ability to browse the library and play content. In addition, Media Browser will be coming to Android, Windows RT, Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8.

While this will be a brand new application, it is extremely faithful to MB2, and many of our popular plugins will be coming along for the ride. There are also several new features, such as user profiles, support for special features, in-movie menus, chapter selections, and more.

News - ARCTIC Bundles OpenELEC with Lower Priced MC001-XBMC

When I'm building a dedicated XBMC box, I often turn to the "embeddded" OpenELEC distro because of its drop-dead simple installation process and just-works feature set. And now with XBMC 12 is out, bringing a modern audio pipeline and Live TV to the platform, it's a great time to upgrade or check out the HTPC software. If you need a box to do this, it would be worth taking a look at ARCTIC's MC001-XMBC which offers an Atom CPU, AMD 5430, DVD drive and OpenELEC 3.0 pre-installed for $229 out the door. Of course if you're interested, you'll need to hurry; this offer is only good until they run out of stock.

News - Fractal Design Releases Core 3000

If the Arc Midi R2's transparent side panel was a little to flashy, or the price a bit too steep you might want to check out Fractal Design's Core 3000. It has many of the same features like dust filters and oodles of space for about $35 less. I've been putting off replacing my aging Lian Li tower chassis (thanks be to duct tape Smile), this might be the guy that finally gets it done.

News - ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 6 "Metro" UI

ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre 6

When Microsoft disabled optical disc drives for media players, I was wondering where applications like TotalMedia Theatre would go - after all, if you're not shipping a new product every so often it's difficult to keep the fresh stream of revenue required to keep making bug fixes and adding support for new "protection" schemes. I wasn't able to see this at CES, but shortly after I got back ArcSoft let me know that it was coming and today I finally got the time to have a look - you can too after the click.

News - SilverStone Prototype NUC Chassis Revealed

SilverStone NUC ChassisWhile we saw a bunch of great stuff from SilverStone at CES, one thing they didn't bring along with them was a chassis solution for Intel's Next Unit of Computing (NUC). SilverStone just unveiled a prototype to show there is something in the works. By the looks of it, the enclosure sports a passive design with heatsink fins on the exterior giving an interesting appearance while exposing more area for cooling. We can't wait to get one in for review. Check out all the eye candy in the photo gallery after the break.
